The High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the civil society organization Global Rights – Partners for Justice will held the Regional Conference “The Situation of People of African Descent in the Americas: Prospects and Challenges” on March 14, 2011 at OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The objective of the conference will be to identify and raise awareness of the main challenges faced by Afro-descendants in the Americas, share best practices and to discuss the following topics:
Affirmative action policies on behalf of people of African descent;
Collective rights of people of African descent, particularly the right to their lands; and
Racial discrimination in the justice systems, including racial profiling, police brutality and the discriminatory enforcement of criminal law through judicial processes.
This conference is being held in the framework of United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/64/169 “International Year for People of African-Descent” and the OAS General Assembly Resolution AG/RES.2550 (XL-0/10) “Recognition of the International Year for People of African Descent”
